Спрашиваю сегодня у дантистки, миниатюрной дружелюбной китаяночки: "Вот всегда у пациентов интересуются, нет ли аллергии к новокаину. А в чем она вообще выражается?"

Обяъсняет - вот, мол, анафилактический шок. Только новокаином сейчас уже и не пользуются - куча других обезболивающих есть. Хотя в шкафчике они все равно держат эпи-пен, на всякий случай.

Мое любопытство неуемно. "А вот, если, скажем, у человека на все обезболивающие аллергия? Как ему тогда зубы лечить?" Парадокс я, понимаешь, придумал, Зенон Бертрамович хренов.

Китаяночка, мило улыбаясь и продолжая орудовать инструментами, безыскусно поведала мне про пациентку, пятнадцатилетнюю девчонку.

У которой и вправду была аллергия на все.

Из кресла дантиста ее на неотложке отвезли в госпиталь. Из этого госпиталя - в Стэнфорд: тут, слава богу, недалеко. Чтобы вывести ее из шока, немедленно требовалась сложная операция, и ни один врач вне Стэнфордского госпиталя не знал, как ее проводить.

Я не знаю, кому было хуже перед операцией - девчушке или ее родителям. Зато я знаю, кому было хуже после - операция прошла успешно, но обошлась в шесть миллионов долларов.

Шесть. Миллионов.

Пять из них покрыла страховая компания - уж не знаю, был ли достигнут потолок выплат за одну операцию, за год или за всю жизнь страхуемого. (Я могу себе представить разговор между директором и главбухом компании. Могу, но не хочу.) Последний миллион родители сторговали до сотни тысяч.

И сейчас по Кремниевой долине ходит, хочется надеяться, вполне здоровая девочка. У которой за левым плечом хихикает дьявол недуга, а за правым - потирает ладони дьявол банкротства.

Но по крайней мере, заключила китаяночка с грустной четверть-улыбкой, зубы теперь девчушка держит в идеальной чистоте.

Got myself wondering why Europeans are called 'Caucasians' in the US. This goes back to a 19th century German craniologist anthropologist Johann Blumental, and then to an 18th century philosopher Meiners, who said that Jews have a "permanently degenerate nature".

Herr Professor Blumental found a skull from the Caucasus region that he liked looked like German skulls, and concluded that since that skull is perfect, Germans (and other so-called Europeans) must have been arrived from Caucasus.

I think I'm going to rebel against this classification.

Kind colleagues helped me to find what seems to be the source of "There is no text without context": this paper quotes Bronislaw Malinowski, an anthropologist.

Quite a guy, too - he spent several years living in Papua among the natives. It was that or internment in a camp during WWI - really, was that choice so hard?

Wikipedia quotes him writing about the islanders:

Who was the source of the phrase "there is not text without context"? It's surprisingly badly represented online. Or is it just folk wisdom?

Oh, as an aside, witness a modern reinterpretation by Jesse Jackson: "Text without the context is pretext".

Except it's not. It's an out of context quote (!) from a Canadian minister who actually said: "A text without a context is a pretext for a proof text", where "proof text" has a Bible scholarship meaning (and thus would have been lost on Jackson's audience).

Funny creative misspelling (there is a term for it which I don't remember :).

This triggered a few alarms: misspelled "hearing impaired", other style inconsistencies like the unusual note about UPS not delivering to PO Boxes, email of the form johnsmith018@gmail.com. Looked up craigslist fraud - and indeed, fake checks are known to occur, and sellers are told to be suspicious about not-face-to-face transactions.

Emailed seller politely asking for a cash payment - silence in return...

А теперь пошел искать по другой ветке - Лушниковых из Кежмы.

Один из моих родственников (хоть и не предок) помнит Тунгусский метеорит: Ангарец с. КЕЖМА (на р. Ангаре) Осип Григорьевич Лушников, 1895 года рождения, рассказал:
-Я в то утро брату на пашню завтрак относил. У нас поле было у Коврижки... Брат сел завтракать, а я цветы по полю собираю. Вдруг громко и часто начало стрелять где-то в сиверу... Земля закачалась, лошади захрапели и на колени попадали. Поднимутся и опять падают... Я бежать домой припустил. Брат что-то кричал вдогонку, но я ничего не разобрал...

Кстати, моему деду в 1908 году было пять лет, поэтому он тоже, вероятно, падение помнил.
