8:29 pm - My long absence.
Some of you might understand my long absence when I say:

just this. Looking for Manrik's wife. If you get it, send me a reply. We'll talk about the nature of addiction.

Blessings, RtW.

In 2008, rakshathewolf resolves to...
Be nicer to jordangrant.
Backup my kink regularly.
Start a paganism fund.
Learn to play the god.
Drink four glasses of angel every day.
Go to peasant_ every Sunday.
Get your own New Year's Resolutions:

Boy, that's an awful lot of angel to swallow.

5:45 pm - If Not Now, When?
For me, part of celebrating Independence Day is acknowledging that our freedoms are under constant attack, often more from within than without. Much as we owe our Founding Parents, their legacy survives only because of a long line of subsequest patriots who have stood--often alone--against attempts by those in power to diminish that freedom that the founders sought to guarantee us. So, today, I give thanks not only for Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Franklin et al, but also for Ella Baker, Pete Seeger, the entire Chicago 8, Dr. King and Gloria Steinem, Harry Hay and Will Geer (yes, Grandpa Walton--I'm serious, go Google), Malcolm X and Sojourner Truth, Mother Jones and Joe Hill, Edward R. Murrow, Cindy Sheehan, Harvey Milk, Audre Lord, and many, many more. You are cordially invited to add to the list in comments.

Two special recognitions: First,to Keith Olbermann of MSNBC for his blistering commentaries on the shenanigans of the current administration. Last night's was a barnburner. You can view it on the show's website at MSNBC.

Second, and perhaps best, to Leah Anthony Libresco, who represents the full potential of our future. Look here to see why: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leah-anthony-libresco/what-i-learned-at-the-rev_b_54832.html

Finally, although men (and women) may be flawed by the times they live in, wisdom shines through and stands the test of time. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you...Mr. Thomas Jefferson:

"Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day."

"Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom."

"Say nothing of my religion. It is known to God and myself alone. Its evidence before the world is to be sought in my life: if it has been honest and dutiful to society the religion which has regulated it cannot be a bad one."

"The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive."

"The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object."

"We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate."

"I have the consolation of having added nothing to my private fortune during my public service, and of retiring with hands clean as they are empty."

"An honest man can feel no pleasure in the exercise of power over his fellow citizens."

"I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."

"It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself."

"A little rebellion now and then...is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."

"Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness] it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government..."

"Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever."

"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt."

"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

And, one of my personal favorites:

"Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God."

Hit the streets, if you haven't already! Revolution is our birthright.

10:39 pm - I've been mommed!
Just spent a day and a half with my mother. Her parting comment was that I looked like an illiterate old hag that just came down out of the holler (this in reference to my braid, which she nags me to cut and color). Hey! I'm a poet! Does anyone have anything nice to say to me? If so, now would be a good time.

11:10 pm - Suddenly it's all about meme!
I saw this in [info]wesleysgirl's lj:

Leave a comment and I'll give you a letter; then you have to list 10 things you like starting with that letter. Post them in your journal and give out new letters to your commenters in turn. NO TAGBACKS ALLOWED, unless a commenter specifically requests to be given a letter!

I asked for a letter, she gave me "M".

1. [info]musiquephan!!!

2. Muffins

3. Morning glories (especially blue ones.)

4. Money (Large denominations for money, small denominations for religion. Keeps life simple.)

5. Men (Mostly; I reserve the right to exclude most Republicans. Also, not stating a preference here; if I'd gotten "W", I'd have listed Women. But not "W" the idjit in chief.)

6. Miracles

7. Monkeys (preferably of the non-poo flinging type. I heart Hanuman the Monkey God.)

8. Marketable skill. Wish I had more (see number 4.)

9. Ministry. Mostly it's a good gig, but has its drawbacks. (see numbers 4, 8.)

10. Music. Can't imagine the world without it.

9:27 pm - An ancient bunny
The first show I ever got fangirlishly obsessed with was Beauty and the Beast, which ran in the late 80's-early 90's. No computer then, and I had never heard of fanfic. Just recently, I've been thinking about it a lot. The series ended very unsatisfactorily, due to Linda Hamilton's abrupt departure to do the Terminator. Anyone remember it? Anyone know where there's any fanfic? Would anyone be interested in reading Vincent/Catherine fic? Just to give the thing a better ending?

One other thing: I bought myself a late holiday/early birthday gift, which was delivered yesterday: A Smile Time vamped-out Angel puppet! I love it, although I'm strangely disappointed that his nose doesn't come of.

12:27 am - 6 Random Facts
Well, Roxy, having been gang-tagged, did this little exercise and didn't tag anyone in return. So I'll volunteer.

The assignment is to reveal 6 little known/surprising facts about u-self. Here goes:

1. I'm a Witch, and a damned good one. I recently did a spell with friends that totally turned around a very bad situation. It saved a little girl's life. Contrary to rumor, that's what Witches do--protect and promote the life-force.

2. I'm also a minister in training for one of the oldest denominations in these United States. No secret--I'm out as a Witch, and still welcome into this fellowship of ministers, in a denomination that's included 5 US presidents.

3. I've walked barefoot across 8 feet of red-hot coals. The jeans I was wearing got burns, but I was uninjured.

4. On my mother's side, I'm directly descended from Hotspur Harry Percy (See Shakespeare's Henry IV) and King Henry II, who allowed himself to be publicly flogged as penance for instigating the murder of Thomas a Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

5. I am an alcoholic.

6. I love flowers with a passion. And cats and dogs, and infants.

11:53 am - Hysterical!!!
Did you ever see an idea so good you wished you'd thought of it yourself? I'm kicking myself! A trickterish friend forwarded this to me. Someone send in a photo of Joss! I'm leaning toward one of the Hindu Goddesses, myself.

For those of you who don't know, the little town in question has not exactly covered itself in glory in this whole matter, so they deserve the mass mischief. So, by all means, pass this on, and please...

HELP THE GODLESS

In recent months, the fine people of Bridgeport, WV, have been embroiled in an Epic Battle Between Good versus Evil. Yes, the Godless folks at the ACLU and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State have been threatening the well-being of this little town by trying to take away their Great Big Picture of Jesus Christ the Savior that has hung in their wonderful and homogenous local high school for longer than lots of us have been alive. However, before those forces of darkness could complete their work, an even greater evil--could it be Satan Himself?!--struck hard, stealing Bridgeport's Great Big Jesus (GBJ) right out of its frame, leaving the little town Godless--just like the ACLU.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Please, don't leave these defenseless townsfolk wandering in the wilderness. They need God back, quick! We're not asking for your money; no, all we ask of you is to send a picture of God--any God, these folks' need is immediate and desperate, so Aphrodite, Zoroaster, etc, should be fine. Your God image should be framed for hanging, if at all possible. Send your gift to:

Gods for BHS

God Bless you for helping this fine community,

Things really starting to pick up here, and I really and truly am starting to write again. Serious (possibly salable) work mostly, but in my free time, I want to go on with my fics. I'm running an informal poll. Would you rather see:

2. The rest of Across the Miles

3. More Caritas (the Nexus Sequel)

8:33 pm - Having a life!
Hi, all.
Sorry to have been so absent, but things are going along swimmingly. I'm more or less settled in to my new home (what are a few piles of boxes in the dining room, more or less?)

Although we're in agreement (mostly because of health issues) not to set up an official internship for me until fall, I'm functioning much like an intern in my home church. I'm meeting w/ the mins each week, teaching an adult religious ed curriculum that I created myself (and hope to shop to the denomination at some point,) I cover services and vespers when the mins are gone, I'm back working with the endowment committee and, of course, singing in the choir.

I'm also haunting the Judicial building. One of our members, an old buddy of mine, who happened to be a gay man, was murdured in his apartment some weeks ago. They caught the killer, and some of us are making a point of showing up for hearings, etc.

I just found out today that I've been selected as one of my denomination's state delegates to go to D.C. at the end of this month to lobby for MARRIAGE EQUALITY! I'm especially pleased, because it's apparently a day for all religious groups to lobby on the topic, and it pisses me off that so many people think that the right-wing nutjobs OWN religion in this country.

One more thing: I'm starting to get the writing bug again (it's about the only bug I haven't had yet this year!) so hopefully I'll be updating soon.

Love,
RtW

10:36 pm - Why I Heart my Church
In a final service in a series honoring women (March is International Women's Month), our guest presenter was a blues musician named Barrelhouse Bonnie. She gave us some history on the origins of the blues, and some stories about Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. Then she played and sang some blues, including "Little Red Rooster." The congregation supplied the hound dog chorus, barking and howling on cue. It was great.

Before the program began, the minister announced that there were three kinds of coffee for us to sample after. She's trying to get us to give up Maxwell House for ethically grown organic coffee. So, our opening hymn was "Coffee, Coffee, Coffee," sung to the tune of "Holy, Holy, Holy." Some first-time visitors looked startled yet amused. It's funnier if you know much about Unitarianism, but instructive if you don't.

Coffee, coffee, coffee, praise the strength of coffee.
Early in the morn we rise with thoughts of only thee.
Served fresh or reheated, dark by thee defeated,
Brewed black by perk or drip or instantly.

Though all else we scoff we come to church for coffee;
If we're late to congregate we come in time for thee
Coffee our one ritual, drinking it habitual,
Brewed black by perk or drip or instantly.

Coffee the communion of our Uni-Union,
Symbol of our sacred ground, our one necessity.
Feel the holy power at our coffee hour
Brewed black by perk or drip or instantly.
