In case people are wondering, and response to questions...
It'd been on again/off again for so very long, people never were particularly clear on where we stood, and that was both of our faults.

But for the record, Marti and I are in fact seperated, but remain the best of friends and business partners, and dedicated to continuing to be both for long years to come. At least until we've collected the whole of the faire curcuit. Anyone seeking to disrupt that business partnership or friendship will have a whole lot of crap coming down on their heads.

There were many reasons over the years as to why we were on or off at the moment. But suffice it to say that we continue to support each other as each finds their own path to happiness. I fully support the people in her life, and wish her to find all the happiness and joy that she deserves (and it's a great deal).

T-SQL to Split a varchar into Words

Originally published at From the Land of Meh.... You can comment here or there.

It’s a user-defined-function to split a given string into ‘words’. In this case I’m delimiting words using commas and spaces. So ‘Smith, Fred’ (with a comma AND a space) will be separated into ‘Smith’ and ‘Fred’.

For convenience, it returns a table with a ‘pos’ column, representing the position in the original text that the word was found.

Hope this helps someone out there.

CREATE FUNCTION SplitWords(@text varchar(8000))
RETURNS @words TABLE (pos smallint primary key, value varchar(8000))
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @pos smallint, @i smallint, @j smallint, @s varchar(8000)
SET @pos = 1
WHILE @pos <= LEN(@text)
BEGIN
SET @i = CHARINDEX(’ ‘, @text, @pos)
SET @j = CHARINDEX(’,', @text, @pos)
IF @i > 0 OR @j > 0
BEGIN
IF @i = 0 OR (@j > 0 AND @j < @i)
SET @i = @j
IF @i > @pos
BEGIN — @i now holds the earliest delimiter in the string
SET @s = SUBSTRING(@text, @pos, @i - @pos)
INSERT INTO @words VALUES (@pos, @s)
END
SET @pos = @i + 1
WHILE @pos < LEN(@text) AND SUBSTRING(@text, @pos, 1) IN (’ ‘, ‘,’)
SET @pos = @pos + 1
END
ELSE
BEGIN
INSERT INTO @words VALUES (@pos, SUBSTRING(@text, @pos, LEN(@text) - @pos + 1))
SET @pos = LEN(@text) + 1
END
END
RETURN
END

Final Dollhouse Trailer Kicks 100 Percent More Ass

Originally published at From the Land of Meh.... You can comment here or there.

Here’s a revised version of the trailer for Joss Whedon’s new show Dollhouse, which explains the show’s concept much more clearly and features a lot more ass-whuppin’. Plus, parachuting and assassining. The show’s central conceit — that these “Actives” are blank slates who can be programmed to have any skillset or emotion — comes out really clearly. Plus it gives a hint of one of the show’s main sources of conflict. Those of you who had a tepid response to the first version should check this one out. [Whedonesque, via Damon/Zeitgeist]

The Man From Earth

Originally published at From the Land of Meh.... You can comment here or there.

A while ago I’d gotten to catch a movie that I wanted to recommend but then hadn’t gotten around to doing so. That movie is the 2007 release of “The Man from Earth” - a science fiction film in the purest sense, and without a single special effect. A great ensemble film that effectively takes place in a single living room while at the same time covering most of history.

This one, if you like films that make you think about, and open up for great conversations afterwards, give this a try during your next netflix order.

Here’s the trailer:

Crap
Looks like Spain broke embargo. traffic spreading at a few per second, radiating out from spain to uk and beyond. Now that it's out other retailers are going to follow suit pretty quickly. The day just got a lot longer - where'd I put those production clusters...

Ok, here's a question for folks...
Before I get started, lemmie say I have no problem with same-sex marrage. So that said, my post is asking for comments on something I'd read earlier today in a blurb on the state supreme court's review of the state prohibition against it. The item that struck me, that I hadn't thought of before was the presidence of establishing arbitrary restrictions on marrage already being a practice. I thought "huh, what restrictions", and it mentions both the standing laws against polygamy, first cousin marrages, etc.

To be completely honest, I'm for the notion if they're of age (also somewhat of an arbitrary standard, 18 or 21), they should be able to marry. And it did seem arbitary to say that a man/woman can marry, but not same sex. But it hadn't struck me that random cultural elements already have an established history of setting up restrictions.

So the question at hand is: 1) does the prescedent of random cultural rules about marrage give weight to being able to say it should be male/female only. and 2) if it's consenting adults that want to be married then they should be allowed to do so, doesn't that also indicate that all the other prohibitions also have to be set aside? and just as it just hit me, 3) what catagory do post-sex change individuals fall into for the purposes of marrage filings?

Huge-normous Battlestar Galactica News
It's too big to tease, so just read it.
by Travis Fickett and Scott Collura

March 18, 2008 - SCI FI Channel is holding an "upfront" event in New York City today, and Battlestar Galactica had its own press conference to share some rather large news with fans. As everyone knows, this is the series' final season - and one that had its production delayed by the writers' strike. Well, now there's a lot more to report. So much, it takes a press conference to do it.

It has been confirmed that the long rumored and scantily reported spin-off, Caprica is in fact a go project. SCI FI Channel has given the green light to a two-hour "backdoor" pilot for the series – which means it'll air as a TV movie (not unlike the promotion and rollout for "Razor") – and if that's successful it'll get a series commitment from the network. The project is currently slated to shoot this spring and air in the fall.

Casting is underway now. As was originally reported when the series was announced, the show takes place 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica. Ron Moore is being vague on his day-to-day involvement with the new series, but Moore and BSG producer David Eick will serve as producers. They also said the show will be more "sweeping drama," and likened it to Dallas. Not sure that's the show we'd like to see crossed with Battlestar - but more BSG is more BSG. We'll have more updates so keep checking IGN TV for details.

Gary Gygax passed away this morning.

I’m going to go color in some dice numbers w crayons and think about how chainmail & dnd changed and created genres beyond counting.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, no worries. Someone will explain it.

Some food for thought...

So, I'm watching this video and it's a great discourse on religion and the US. Even for non Obama fans (which I'm not particularly a massive fan of thus far), it's got some really good points in it for both sides. Give it a try, would be interested to see what others think.

About the cryptic message yesterday...
We'd been going to hold off on the announcement until next weekend, but as it turns out the cat was already let out of the bag over on Tribe, so I figured I'd note it here as well. RenProd received the nod from the city of Folsom to produce the 2008 Folsom Renaissance Faire. I'd posted yesterday right after I got the call and was just so elated, as much or more from the weight of the waiting and wondering being lifted as anything.

Marti and I pulled together just an incredibly amazing proposal (easily the largest doc I've ever written for a non-day job), I should have had it count toward the November writing month since it was well over 15,000 words by itself.

Anyway, so there it is, and now it's time to start churning towards a great 2008 season.

On an aside: like with our pick up of Tahoe, we won't have any bashing of the other folks who were bidding. It's rather like post election time, now the energy needs to go into making a great event, not in anyone being better than the next guy/gal.

Onward!

Some musing...
<tr><td>So it’s been pointed out to me...</td></tr><tr><td>

That while I've been posting more recently of things found on the web, rants about faire, chatting about work and travels, there's still very little that I ever post about myself personally. Trials, tribulations, or things that make me happy for that matter. Friends, Relationships, etc.

I hereby make a new year's resolution retroactively to work on that and be a bit less of a black box when it comes to those topics and let a bit more light in on what's going on in the live and heart of Da' Bill.

So there.
