Comment here if you want the full Val experience. Then I might add you back. If you simply add me, you'll still get to enjoy my public fashion & design entries.
29th-Jun-2008 03:17 pm - Tiny friends cut
I've removed a couple of journals from my friends list. You're more than welcome to keep me on yours to contiue reading my public entries, but I needed to do a little pruning.

And please don't ask why. If you do anyways, I'll honestly tell you why, and try to do so as tactfully as possible, but I guarantee that you'll be offended. Let's not put each other in a bad situation.
23rd-Jun-2008 06:18 pm - Key Lime Cupcakes + Cup Pies
My favorite thing about this recipe is that it's a filled cupcake, but the filling is baked right into it, so there's no pesky cutting and replacing. The cake is a regular old white cake, with a few extras; it doesn't take much to make a plain cake into a special one. Start to finish, it only took me about 2 hours to make these! Easy cake, easy filling, and easy assembly; what more could you ask for?

Makes about 15 cupcakes, with leftover filling. I made 3 full cup pies with the filling!

I also think that the cake, sans filling has a great resemblance to the shortbread cookies in Peruvian alfajores. We like to put lime zest in the cookies, so they're practically fraternal twins. My parents are planning a picnic for Peruvian independence day (July 28!) so I think I might adapt it into a layer cake, using manjar blanco between layers.

22nd-Jun-2008 03:15 pm - Key lime cupcakes, part 1
I decided on a purely theoretical key lime cupcake recipe. This is what it's going to be:
  • 1 full recipe white cake, zest of 1 lime, if we have limes on hand OR substituting 1/8c liquid for 1/8c lime juice, if we don't
  • 1/2 key lime pie filling recipe
  • fill cups halfway; drop 1.5T pie filling into the middle and bake them up (I'll probably have leftover filling, which I can use to try out more cup pies: prepare graham cracker crust and put in cups, about 1/2 way up; fill cups and bake as usual)
  • when cool, top with whipped cream (or if you like meringue or extra work, meringue) and graham cracker crumbs

As I said, this is a theoretical recipe; adding lime juice to the cake batter might have adverse effects (overly fluffy, or completely flat) so I'm going to try it out RIGHT NOW and maybe we'll have some crazy cupcake photos by the end of the night. It'll be just like old times.
  • 4th-Jun-2008 11:42 pm - Wide leg syndrome, part 2
I've figured out a couple (meaning two) cool outfits to wear with my wide legged jeans, and they're quite simple, but the cut of the jeans is interesting enough, right?

My shoes are these; I dig the color a lot!

I was trying everything on the other night, and decided that what my outfit needed was a tough-looking statement jewelry to add interest to my basic top half. I really want that bird necklace, and my cropped blazer just covers my waistband. Perfect!

Dia de los Muertos isn't until November, but I've come across a lot of sugar skulls. I'm not complaining; I love them!

This one's my favorite. Pin Up Girl Clothing also has a double strand design of this necklace. Filigree sugar skull necklace on my chest soon?
    24th-Apr-2008 10:27 pm - I feel terrible
I've had my black Luella hobo in my closet with my white patent satchel and when I took it out this morning, STAINS!
    The victim:

    The perp:

Of course, mine is black, with oversized charms (what's with that shoe?).

I wiped it with rubbing alcohol, but then it started to wear away the patent finish a bit. Which made me feel worse. This is terrible. If you have any methods for gently removing dye transfer stains from patent leather, I'm all ears. All of the methods I read about while searching have rubbing alcohol in them (windex, antibacterial hand gel, aerosol hairspray, perfume).

I love my bags. This is so sad! And I think I've only had my hobo in there for a week. Lesson of the day: always use a dust bag.

I also love this song. One of my all time favorites.
