The Coda of me

So I'm trying to be more pro-active about LJ and life in general. I got this calendar addon for Thunderbird and have tasks and calendars and everything.

So far I failed at the 'scheduling my unemployed time' bit. But I do have this hand task list which includes certain things I'm obligated to do. (Check Guild Forums. Check TF2 Clan Forums. Check Livejournal.) Hopefully this means more LJ for me.

So what's been up with me? )

Not much else. I need to make an attendance tracking module for my guild that tracks events, who signed up for the events, who we took on the events, and etc.... but I know only basic SQL (and rusty) and no PHP for a web interface for said thing. Anyone have any tips on where to start? Perhaps forgo the web interface and do something local on my machine and then adapt it later? What do you tech heads think?

Of Resumes and Cover Letters

Okay, so I was going to make a two prong post, but I think this is actually two different posts.

I am going to be applying for a dream job, and want to make sure my pitch is perfect. This is a 'apply by snail mail' position, so I'll be mailing my resume and cover letter.

A.) I suppose this means I should get some fancy resume paper, eh?
B.) Should I be addressing the short term of employment at my last job in my cover letter? I worked there for three months, and was laid off. I suspect this looks bad on my resume unexplained, should I jump this into the cover letter?
C.) My current resume is one page, Objective, Skills, Experience, Education, with a second page of references. Most of the page is taken up by work experience. Not all of my work experience applies directly to the types of jobs I want though, but it shows that I'm a long term employee when I *do* get a job. Thoughts?

Job Hunting Tips

So guys,

what sites do you use for job hunting?

I'm trying to work myself past the 'curled up in bed pretending the world doesn't exist' stage and into the 'seeking a job' stage, but I'm getting mixed success.

Film at 11

So... I don't have the energy to call everyone right now, so I'll just use trusty ol' LJ.

To the shock of very few people who have heard me and Corey talk about our job, I was laid off today.

So, I'm still a little shell shocked and am currently at home muttering. This was just the easiest way of letting a large number of important people know.

Finally

I have searched for this for a long time.

FOR A LONG TIME.

The journey has been fraught with peril. Late night searches. Images of hentai fan comics I did not want to see.

The coming across a resin statue and deciding I wasn't going to spend that much money, nor import from Japan.

Finally. Today. He has arrived.

He is the strongest.

He is pink.

He comes with replaceable hands that either take a clenching fist of fury, open palmed, or a taunting gesture.

He has a replaceable head crying tears of manly might.

He is... action figure Dan Hibiki.

No word if he possesses a fraction of the God Head... but really, does he actually need it?

Pictures! )

“So, those of you who know me could, had already talked to me today might think that I'm about to make an ___ but you know I'm gonna have to be very, very hard to ___ but it's nothing serious. Just Computer World but no actually I was just at the grocery and Phil or Tom and I usually go to the grocery store together so it's convenient and only one of us has to drive and you know. It's just to get time to make sure to get it done. Well for the next past couple of weeks I haven't been going for various reasons. Working on my computer. This or that or had to stop to go by the bank to cash a cheque. You know, that sort of thing. So, it's become kind of a recurring where the people at the counter they ask where I am or they ask me why I'm alone and only at night would I be able to see a woman driving down, or riding down the sidewalk on a horse. Anyway, so today after the store again. It's like the 3rd or 4th week running cos I gotta work on the formats in Computer World today and I'm there and not only does the cashier I'm at ask me what's going on. The chick ___, are you guys fighting. Is everything ok and then the girl next cashier over goes, oh my God, you're by yourself again. I haven't seen you guys together in like a month. Is everything ok? I've left out of the commotion by going to grocery store by myself. I really don't know what this means. I wonder if I should actually be concerned. I don't know. I just thought I'd share and I, I thought it would be clean important focus on rather than the non forgiving motherboard I currently own but anyway. I hope everyone's having a good weekend and I will talk to you guys later.”

Why must this occur with every terrible tragedy?

I am really starting to think that Fox News is run by the devil.

Every time I turn around its airing things that are incorrect, things that are sensationalized, fear-mongering hate building stories of woe and doom.

It is really getting to me.

Today's annoyance involves the tragedy at NIU yesterday. A horrbile thing happened, something that touches most Americans to some degree because of the "University? I've been to school once..." or "I have kids at school!", and this is just a pointless tragedy and we should be spending time finding out what happened, if anything reasonable could occur to stop it from happening, and to console the family.

Instead, this morning Jack ****ing Thompson got on Fox News as a 'Campus Shooting Expert' and declared that Violent Video Games, obviously, had something to do with this tragedy. And oh, he'd predicted this would happen.

His opening line was this totally insincere "I wish I wasn't here..."

I bet. The Florida bar can't take away his license to practice law fast enough.

Delayed Smash Brothers?!

So Smash Bros is delayed until January in Japan. All sense dictates that the North American release will follow suit. This makes Chris a sad panda...

But wait...

What's this?

Everyone's suspected...

And now it's true!

Well this game has officially reached Epic status. I can only hope that popular theory proves right when it states that Megaman is the next most popular choice.

There should've been only one...

I honestly don't know where to begin. I suppose a declaration requesting the past 90 min of my life back would be a start, but only just.

I might also request, retroactively, that all the time I spent watching the previous movies and television series be taken back as well. Then I would not only have a significant amount of time on my hands to do with as I pleased, but I would not have to suffer through the absolute horrid disappointment.

What am I talking about? Highlander. I'm talking about Highlander.

Highlander History... )

This movie... takes place an undisclosed amount of time in the future from the past. Far enough forward that people have fancy sunglass computers, but not so far that already old mortal Joe looks any older. Methos apparently grew a pair and a surly attitude at some point, meanwhile Duncan lost his pair and thinks he's Batman. No, seriously. He's wandering around Post-Apocalyptic town #14 jumping off rooftops to stop would be rapists/muggers.

Summary of Movie follows, SPOILERS! )

I honestly hope they just let the franchise DIE.

On the up side, like I said I haven't seen the second movie. Nor have I seen the American animated television series that was supposedly silly and starred a future MacLeod immortal... in the future!

Except for maybe watching the series in a complete set type deal, I think I might be done with Highlander. I barely heard about this movie before it came out, and now I know WHY. Its AWFUL. Each subsequent movie makes the pain harsher.

...
...
Okay, I still want to see the anime Highlander movie that just came out. I cannot believe that isn't just 100% awesome.

... right?

Saga

So I tried out a new MMO beta last night, just out of curiousity. This was an MMO of a different sort, it was a strategy game. Now it's not turn based, but I wouldn't call it real time either, as the 'ticks' at which things actually happen are set 15 min (!!!) apart. So I tried it, and it was novel enough, but it seems to have a 'CCG' factor to it, and it feels like if I don't go out and buy 'booster's for it, I don't get to progress. I was able to take down the first two quests with my starter units, but multiple attempts at the third quest ended in failure. So either you need boosters, or multiple players to down the quests.

Add to that the fact that you build your city at an atrociously slow rate... I had all my peasants assigned to build a new home for peasants to try to attract a bigger workforce, and I ended up going to bed and coming back today to finally find the sucker finished. That's a slow development cycle

All in all, I wouldn't recommend it to tanyone but the most die hard strategy buffs, and even then with a word of warning. Maybe if you're more into the genre than I you'd find a glimmer of value in there, but I don't really like it.

I'm kind of itching for a new strategy game, possibly turn based... sci fi or fantasy probably. Not one for 'realistic' shooters. Any suggestions?

On a side note, I'm going to pick up Project Sylpheed as soon as I can ascertain its whereabouts after release. That demo released on the Xbox 360 marketplace has me hooked. Don't get many Wing Commander style games these days, so I'm definitly gonna pick that sucker up.

Side note: This courtesy of [info]pirateday made me crack-up. Transformers humor for the win! It gets really good about halfway through.

Last Minute post for the win...

So tired. House is cleaned, mostly. We broke two mops in the process of cleaning the house, so we gave up and the kitchen did not get mopped. Other than that, the house is pretty much as clean as it was going to get. Tomorrow I turn in the keys and the garage door openers and we'red one with that phase. Then we get to continue unpacking.

Still no internet, so I'm still mooching off the neighbors. The signal is unreliable from my room, though, and even on the most western portion of the house I still get frequent disconects. So I'm trying to keep my one a day going, but I'm having to rough it.

I'm so tired... I don't even have my computer hooked up yet, if that tells you guys how busy we've been. Tomorrow I'm supposed to have off to get the house stuff taken care of, but my boss scheduled an appointment for me anyway in the afternoon. I have no clean work clothes, I'm not evne sure where half of my clothes are. Tomorrow should be fun... hopefully the guy got my message and rescheduled.

This post's gonna have to be short, we're moving today! @_@ If you're in Idaho and we didn't tell you about it and you want to help, come on over. The truck'll be here by the time you are, I'm sure! ^_^

Packing is such a hassle when your entertainment center has four video game consoles and a DVR in the cabinent. The amount of wires we pulled out of the entertainment center last night was astounding.

I still have all my boxes and such upstairs, and that makes me cry that we'll have to carry them all downstairs. Hell, we still haven't taken apart the fuzball table. @_@

Well anyway, short but sweet post on a hellish day! Side note: Internet may not function at new house till Thursday, so if I go silent, it *may* not be my fault.

Bleah. Updating at work, so I don't have much time. Of course it takes a major blow of bad news to get me updating again. But just found out we're going to have to move within the next 30 days because the owner is moving back to Idaho.

So we didn't do anything wrong, there's nothing we can do to stop it, it's simply a no win scenario. Bleeeeah.

Just thought I'd commiserate.

I've seen some pretty screwed up things...

I've seen lots of messed up things in my day as an internet junkie.. but man...

This one here wins.

Be warned, it is Spider-man Versus the Ever Loving Blue Eye'd Thing... as we've never seen them before.

This isn't some cheesy animated clip from a cartoon show!

Oh no.

This isn't a fan trailer of Fantastic Four & Silver Surfer.

This isn't a slide show.

This is a live action gem from Japan.
