    Visit USA
Not quite one but managed to take the longest vacation after our wedding - 8 1/2 days in all. Quite adventurous when you travel that long with a 5 month old but it turned out to be a nice vacation. My tenure break is almost over, 4 weeks flew by :( Minneapolis is not allowing us to have a good summer yet, it is either raining or staying fairly cold even now. Hardly have played any cricket this year - hope to get some time to play over the next 2 months. Will be back with some more updates soon, maybe a travelogue.

    Odi thalli!!

For the benefit of those who dont follow my native language, it translates into some thing like "ran for my life"... Well, the 1 Mile that I ran was a good reminder of aging :( The dry cough that I am having didnt help but that is not a big excuse for the poor timing that I clocked. Anyway, I finished in 8 some thing minutes - waiting for official results to get posted. My personal goal was to do it below 8 minutes...

Anyway, that is the big update for today... Work, added responsibility due to Ashima's arrival and life in the US in general is taking its toll!! I should confess though that I havent done enough for Ashima yet - she is 4 months old tomorrow.. Ciao all, will return some day...

    Orkatte, alla itharaa...
I have been active in Orkut of late. Not that I have been actively searching for people. I just log in every other day and see whether some one has found me accidentally. I have also done my share of searching and have crossed the 100 mark. I traced a few old friends, seniors, colleagues etc. I like the community for this, lack of privacy is some thing that I dont like.

Ok, time is 35 past the hour. Time to return to work. It will be 2 more hours before I hit the bed. The solace is that I will work from home tomorrow. Amein.

    Bunty without bubli!!
And we finally went to India after about 18 months. We had been planning this vacation ever since we booked our tickets in Jan, a good 3 months of planning. And when your wife is detail oriented, you have a mess. Weekends after weekends went by in shopping for people and self (forget the greenback that was spent, it was for people whom you cared, most often). And our bags were all packed at least a good 3 days before the trip which was even better. This ensured that I had the first ever flight home out of United States without any luggage related issue at the airport.

We chose to fly by American Airlines, direct to Delhi from Chicago. Several reasons - frequent flyer, good fare and a calculated risk with Anisya to avoid a hop and take one flight across to India. It worked, the service was also pretty decent to my surprise. Expectedly, Delhi airport was chaotic but who cares, you were breathing in India which was above them all. (Forgive me if I am sounding too patriotic, I found everything in India just about great) The country and its people are very predictable which I feel is great. And one such thing about Delhi is the Sumo/Qualis that comes to pick you up at the airport. And the Surd driver who is invariably called Bunty!! It seemed as if there was only one Surd in this world - Bunty Singh. Well. our man was typical. He was blasting away Banghra music which none of us enjoyed. Our man was more keen on showing off his collection of songs than allow us to catch up with family. My fil was rude enuf to interrupt the music half way through. :) The drive through Cantt was nostalgic, again for several reasons. ;) Well, anyway Anisya got a taste of the attention that she was in for with her grandparents on day 1 itself. Her Nani had started to bribe her at the airport - a toy mobile and a Barbie was waiting and when she reached home, more gifts were waiting. A late night marked the beginning of our India trip, some thing that characterized the entire journey. No complaints whatsoever, no vacation is long enuf. More on our stay in Trivandrum, Bangalore and Delhi some time soon.

    Driven by Orkut...
I revisited my page on Orkut thanks to an online community that is being created at Orkut for the team that is working onsite at my client from Wipro... I was asked by a few people about my disappearance from the blog... Time is a premium, even tonight it is... I am feeling a bit under the weather and it is 10 past the hour here in Minneapolis... Given that I need to be up by 7 tomorrow, I better go... It is good to find that there are people still reading my blog... I promise to return with an update of the last year or so that we spent in Minneapolis... A place that I considered as Bihar of India, wish Bihar would be a similar surprise!!! Cricket, in real as well as on the web, remains my primary hobby... Anisya is like a parrot these days which is fun as well as scary... More l8er, Taruna has already yelled at me once for keeping awake in spite of the cold and sore throat... Adios netizens, till I return to bore u...Cheers...

Worst ever New Year eve in years
We had the dullest New Year eve in years... The old adage, "Health is wealth" rings in my mind this New Year... Anisya is down with a "Stomach Flu"... American doctors have a fetish for Flu I guess... Determine the body part that is affected and attach a Flu to it for defining the disease!!! Anyway, my daughter is suffering from diaorrhea, slight fever and vomitting for the last 2 days... Doctors here dont give any medicine which is kind of good... And thus we had a quiet evening at home, with food from Burger King and McDonald's (yuck) and a Hindi movie called Dus... Hopefully the year will be better.. Happy New Year to all my friends and family, prayers to God for a very good year for everyone out there...

    Sayoojyam!!!
This is what came to my mind when Taruna cooked Dosa at home... (I remember [info]oolan using this when he had sardines and chicken curry from a Filipino restaurant once..) It was also an eye opener for me as well as Taruna.... To me, my attachment to roots to this extent was a revelation... I have always smarted under the belief that this was not the case... Taruna exclaimed,"I am really enjoying the grub, I have also become a South Indian!!!"... Anisya also seemed to enjoy Dosa, Sambar and Chutney... And now, I am listening to some MGR Golden Hits and looking forward to the 3 day weekend, thanks to Xmas...

Do I have a good excuse for being away from LJ for about 5 months.. I have developed this knack of coming up with an excuse of late, so says Taruna... Well, here we go... Since my last update, my brother-in-law got married, we got an L1 visa after being on tenter hooks and have moved to the US for about 2 years... Till this moment, we have been clear on returning to India at the earliest opportunity and we are hoping that circumstances wont make a change... We were busy settling down all these days, things never settle when u r here for a short term... Every big ticket purchase is analysed and requires extensive work using spread sheets!!!

We have also got used to the MN winter!!! It does get really cold here but if u have good winter protection, it is no big deal... It is warm today, it is 5 degree celsius outside... The weather robs you of the pleasure of playing cricket though... One big reason why I wud want to get done with winter is probably the opportunity to play cricket... I am trying to stay in shape by occasional work outs in the gym...

A personal update was the only intent of this post... Lot of learning about people has happened over the last few months... You never stop learning I guess... Human beings, they are so dynamic in nature and are easily moulded by their surroundings... You call it adaptability to make it sound sophisticated... The fact is that it poses considerable challenges on people around u... And of course, the fact that people tend to view with a different eye over time...

I would like to keep moving... Hey, Swamy Saranam... I am on a self imposed vegetarian diet during the Mandalam.. Following a vegetarian diet is a bit difficult in this country especially during the holidays... Adios for now with an intent to be more regular with updates...

    Mallus - a critique
Ever since I read Mandan Vinod's article on Kerala Kaumadi I have been doing this soul searching about Mallus.. Some kind of silent observation about my own people... The more I look back, clearer is my view point about the distinction that I attach to my people - haves and have nots... Now, who are they... It is plain and simple... The first category is those who are working outside of Kerala... I have been fortunate (or should I say unfortunate) to have traveled to desolate places in UP and Bihar... Really absurd places where even good grasp of Hindi will not help, you need to know the local version of Hindi to survive.. And I have found Mallus holding key positions (figuratively even, holding the key as the Stores guy) in sugar factories... They survive some how and make their ends meet rather than go back to Kerala and do nothing...

Then there is have nots who just stay in a cocoon... Like Vivek Paul, the outgoing Vice Chairman of Wipro said, in the real world there is no cocoon... If u think there is, u r mistaken... I know several people who think that having a 9-5 job (they maybe right about the working hours) with a 7K salary is the ultimate thing in this world... Red rice, beef, arrack over weekends and burden to immediate family... I am very happy that this didnt happen to me... Owe my father for this I guess.. Even Amma, she never allowed us to lean on her beyond a point... Good values indeed...

I know a lot of guys struggling (they made the choice really) back in Trivandrum... There was this recent case of a guy from Jawahar Nagar... Let me not take names, u never know who all are reading my blog (brand me an eternal optimist, if u will).. Ravi Soman, my good friend was in Trivandrum recently... He was trying to find how people were doing and found that 2 of our old buddies were "struggling"... Well, in terms of calibre, these guys are good... Jawahar Nagar guys are above average in every sphere (Non-Jawahar Nagar guys reading this may argue - well, we are like Bengalis who think they are above the rest, live with it), they decide to go down in life or go beyond the ordinary... It is just that... This guy is getting 6K apparently as an accountant in Trivandrum... And bugger is still not married at the age of 34... Ravi sent me his resume and I like a fool sit and do up his resume spending 45 mts on it (like the way i am updating my LJ at 0430 AM on a working day) and he didnt even respond to my mail!!! Well, it mite be bcos of my heart to heart talk on what he needs to do... Maybe, he didnt appreciate it... Ravi said later that he is only keen on going to the Middle East... Hmmm, the wrong notion of quick money in the Middle East is still there I think... You can make good money in India, move out of your comfort zones... Many more such chaps... Nandagopal, I tried to tell him over chat to move out of Trivandrum... What is he doing in Trivandrum after his MS from Virginia Tech... Bright guy, wasted talent... Santhosh Karunakaran, love for cricket made him drop out of his Masters program in the US... Weird, at least that is what I wud like to believe... And now that his cricket career is almost over, what will he do? God alone knows...

I should probably sleep now... Next time, I will probably write about growing up in Jawahar Nagar... about the silence that used to grip the ground when "damsels" used to walk by... antics of the guys which included my own brother... And of course the rise and fall of Jawahar Nagar!!!!

    Back in the States
And guess what I am doing, playing cricket over weekends!!! I am in Minneapolis for the last 40 days or so and has played 3 matches in the league here during this time... The performance has been pretty good so far, bowling 20 overs for 89 runs and picking 5 wickets... The league here is much more competitive than the one in Raleigh... Each team seems to be having at least 2-3 good batsmen but I wonder why these guys play 45 overs since it takes one full day...

Things are going pretty well at work front... Have been traveling a bit to help the sales team open new business... Hopefully we will have some success in the coming days...

My apartment is in downtown Minneapolis and the view from my living room is quite intimidating with those big buildings right across... Being summer, the view of the swimming pool is also enjoyable... :) Boyz in the US are keeping busy I suppose... Had met Darsan after a long time while in CA on Friday...

The weekend is almost over... Need to get moving, have some work to finish, iron clothes, cook some food and go to the Gym... And that will make it midnight...

Was surprised to find that Anil Nandakumar, an old colleague knows about this page and reads it whenever I update it... Well, this update is dedicated to him though it was a dull and drab update on my life in Minnesota...

More later, maybe I will write about the guy who was trying his level best to engage a conversation with a girl today at the temple here... And his parents were watching him all this while... Well, watching people can be quite interesting at times... :)

    Quick update
Saurav Ganguly lashes out at non-performing batsmen... Good, what triggered the fall of wickets... U didnt want to lose an early wicket chasing a ball that was wide outside the off stump... Led by example, dont try to distract attention... When Sachin is not there, u wud have expected Ganguly, VVS and Dravid to put their heads down... See how Inzy and Youhana played under pressure... Hats off to Pathan and Dravid.... Pakistan may win the Trophy... I wud love Aussies getting beaten... :)

Wipro beat CDOT by 35 runs... Afan scored 87 and took 2... I wud have been happy if he had scored a century...

My team won the match yesterday... Comfortable win, 5 wickets and 2 plus overs left... I picked one wicket and was not getting enuf speed... Still managed!!! And we went to an Indian restaurant and hogged like anything after the game..

    Work is worship...

I also want to become a playback singer
I have been off Mallu songs for a long time now since we hardly see any Malayalam channel in Bangalore... That doesnt mean that my knowledge about new Hindi Songs is any better either... But then, after hearing Lajjavathiye, I am confident of a future in singing!! and of course Yesudas in recorded form is pretty pathetic... Anil George had written in saying that Yesudas shud probably stop and I argued... I had just listened to Yesudas live and was all in awe and argued with him... And within a week I listened to some of the latest songs from the legend and it is pathetic... Oh yeah, I listened to Suresh Gopi's kavitha paarayanam (Poem recital)... It was pretty neat...

Does everyone spend like me when they go back to India on shopping? This is my 5th trip to the US in the last 5 1/2 years and I have spent around 300 bucks already... I have another 50 bucks worth of shopping to do... So, in 2 trips in a year, I spend around 500-600 dollars on shopping!!!

Spoke to a batchmate, Jijoe Varghese after almost 10 years... We spoke for about 45 mts... He has married a North Indian like me... Well, his wife is elder to him and is a Hindu whereas he is a Xian... Complicated stuff I am told... Then I had Lal K Lexman of Mech writing in... Most people wont know him... He was not loud in CET and was in M2... He is in Merchant Navy and wud be touching Italy and then Saudi I am told... He has offered to show people around inside the ship... Maybe, I will write to [info]mujib to see whether he wants to show his daughter a ship in the real sense... I wud love to get on board one myself one day...

I have one more week... Need to call a few people... Sabin Sundar and [info]oolan has become very busy... These guys didnt believe that marriage is gonna change their lives like this!!! I tried Sabin 4 times and I have decided not to disturb now... He coaches his team, ICC in Washington DC and is regarded highly in the league - player to watch kinds... That is the league where Venkatapathy Raju plays... And Hari must be busy setting up his new home I guess... Well, some Indian friends dont call back but I have a few American friends who still pick my call!!!

Time to go to the Gym... I try to maintain my fitness... Tomorrow morning, I will play the last match in Minneapolis and hope to help my team win... Rite now, Wipro must be playing CDOT in Bangalore... Am sure that CDOT will be routed... Afan had written in saying that he is all charged up and that is bad news for CDOT.. Back in Trivandrum, Santhosh Karunakaran took 6 wickets for 10 runs and Thatha Suresh scored 62 not out against Kids in the A Division League finals... With Ranji selection just around the corner, it cud not have come at a better time for these aging guys...

    Adios for now...

    Cricket and cricket fanaticism
Well, I had a call with the Ravis of USA… J They were thinking of subscribing for the cricket match between India and England… Well. I didn’t find any chance of revival of the team… India typically struggles in England and this time also it is no different… Maybe, there was no determination within the team that was on show against Australia… Well, u will get mothered this time around…

Kiron termed my interest in cricket to “Poison that every man has”… Forget cricket for a moment and let us delve on Indians in the United States… I had read an article in Kerala Kaumadi Online written by none other than Mandan Vinod of 95 Applied wherein he had thrashed the attitude of Malayalis in general and had talked about the tolerance of the American society… Well, there is no doubt that the Americans are more tolerant… In India, “locals” would catch u and screw ur happiness… However, I get pissed off when people shun India!!! There is this colleague of mine who is in US for the last 10 years or so… I told him during Olympics that we won Silver when Rathore’s hand didn’t tremble whereas our biggest hope Anju lost steam after a good first jump… He replied, “We?”…. I camouflaged my shock somehow and said, Well, India… There you go… Why make that statement? Are you trying to dissociate yourself from India… If so, change your name, go after some cream which would make your skin white and never come to India for living there… Sad indeed… In that sense Indians are way ahead in tolerating people and their idiosyncrasies… If some one is working abroad and they plan to return to India (maintaining Indian citizenship) the Government shud think of charging people for maintaining citizenship I feel…

I am in my last week in Minneapolis at least in this trip.. Wipro is a huge company and has its own problems… I feel that the marketing team is not aggressive at all… They are closing orders because of the size of the company and references…. Anyways, my project’s future hangs in the balance since we are pursuing a multimillion dollar opportunity… Hopefully, the outcome will be favorable to us… The trip was hectic as ever, a sleep pattern of 5 hours a day is not fun at all…

Anisya would have changed quite a lot… I left Bangalore when she was barely 6 months old and when I get back she will be 8 months old… Babies undergo lot of change during this time I am told… Hopefully, she will smile on seeing me… Atleast the goodies from Uncle Sam’s land should do the trick…

I am excited to find that the guys in Bangalore have set the ball rolling for the reunion of our batch later this year at Bangalore… I am also happy to find the mailing list reach 216 members – it was my initiative and fore see its growth to 300 within a year’s time… I know that quite a few of them are waiting to see how it pans out… The moderators are doing a great job by keeping the mailing list regulated which means that no nasty messages are sent out to the group… Well, even now our guys are capable of sending nasty mails to the group!!!

Had been to the Onam celebrations of the Minnesota Malayalee Association… It was a good program and the pains taken by the organizers for arranging some thing like this is commendable… There were some 250-300 people and they had a feast and cultural programs… Of course, as is the case with any such program, there were some kidukk akks.. J

Back in India, 2 quizzers bit the dust… Vijay and Gerald got married within a week from each other… Grand Old Dad, Bejoy Chacko is still single pursuing his MBA at the University of Chicago… I will probably get to meet him next weekend at Chicago… I will leave Minneapolis without seeing any local attractions… I don’t think they have much here apart from Lakes and Parks where people go and spend time…

I am just longing to get back… The trip has widened my knowledge of my domain and hopefully these trips away from family will help us in the long run… I got a decent hike and hopefully the company will reward me for the sacrifices and hard work…

Current hobby – downloading music from the net and creating CDs… Favorite site – mag4you.com

Pak will win tomorrow at Edgbaston... Players for India - Pathan, Bhajji and Dravid but then Inzy, Youhana and Shoaib Mallik will prove deadlier...

Yet another weekend, yet another cricket match...
We had one more match this weekend... The venue and opposition were different though, the pitch was good and had predictable bounce... We played CTS - 3M today and the opposition mostly consisted of people from Chennai and Tams... They batted first and we started well... They were 25 in 8 overs and scored some runs in 9th and 10th when the captain tossed the ball to me... The opening batsman who was playing was removed by me in my second over... I was getting quite a few yorkers today and the ball was also coming out well from the hand... Their captain was a hard hitting batsman and was just waiting for the ball to be pitched up... I made him sweat in an over... And thrice he was rapped in front but they play without LBWs... At the end of the over, I said 3 of them in front and he got agitated... Finally, we patched up and he was waiting for my next over... The 4th ball was skied by him and the fielder at deep wicket was caught napping... He left a skier through his hands... The next ball was whacked by him over long off, an intended yorker which was picked by him and hoisted.. Thanks to the dropped catch, he won the battle... I went for 20 odd runs in 4 overs... The last 3 overs were disastrous... They thrashed 49 runs in the 3 overs and most of it was by their captain... We were left to chase 136 in 20 over and we had a cracker of a start, 31 in 3 and we started losing wickets regularly even though we required only 34 runs in the last 5 overs... I was the last batsman, thanks to my dismal batting and the policy to give a chance to everyone... I scored a single in the first ball and the other end was down in 2 balls.. Again, my bowling was good and the number of yorkers that I bowled surprised even me!!! I was reminded of Lalu's consistency when we used to play in Jawahar Nagar...

More important was the indications from the body... I hate the signals but if this is going to recur, it is not going to be a happy situation... My right foot was paining after bowling 4 overs and knees felt a little heavy.. This is when I had practiced for some time before bowling and had jogged before the match... I should probably go to the Gym through next week and see how the body reacts...

I will be going for Yesudas live next week... Thanks to Sabin, I met 2 guys from Malluland in Target, apparently there are quite a few of them... One is a contractor here, Jagan and another is one from IBM... Yesudas charges 20K USD for a program here in the US apparently... This includes his travel, accommodation and orchestra...

Minneapolis downtown is good, I never used to look at the height of the buildings when I used to walk through the streets... I did that couple of times over the last week and it was intimidating... I am looking out of the window and having a good view of downtown from where I am... I also worked pretty late yesterday and found youngsters heading for clubs... And I was heading home!!!

I walked around downtown earlier in the evening... The motive was to get a feel of the place where I stay, the neighborhood... There are a few good restaurants in the area but I will never go there on my own... It doesnt make sense to walk into a restaurant all by myself...

I will probably write about me, people and life in general tomorrow.... Time for a wash and some cooking... :)

    One more time...
Every outing at cricket in the US is a learning experience; in fact every outing in cricket is a learning experience irrespective of location. At times, you look back on your cricket or some times you reflect on life from your experiences in the cricket field…

Well, within a week of my arrival here in Minneapolis, I was playing cricket… It kind of surprised a few of the guys here… I knew that I would play cricket this time and hence had carried my usual cricket shoes thus avoiding a 12 dollars expense that I had incurred last time when I was in North Carolina… J

When people from the sub-continent play cricket, they play with a certain amount of passion and the experience that I had over the weekend was no different… I played for Wipro – Best Buy against TCS – Target… TCS has about 400 guys in Target and apparently has 16 teams in Minneapolis!!! Well, that explains the fanaticism with which Indians associate to cricket… Wipro doesn’t have many guys in Best Buy and hence the team was a bit weak compared to TCS but then the guys played with lot of fire and energy…

    The venue was the ground in Ramsgate… Ramsgate is a TCS adda, the place is infested with Indians am told… Maybe, the apartment owner decided for a name that has some semblance of India to attract guys from India… {It remains to be seen whether TCS would buy this place, post IPOJ}

Anyway, the ground didn’t have any specific shape… For instance there was a picnic shed right behind the keeper… If the ball goes into that, it is one run declared… And the ball was the best part to it… It was a taped tennis ball.. People spend time in applying insulation tape on tennis balls before the match… Now, it is really a different ball game… The ball swings and skids off the wicket, even worse than a matting wicket… And the pitch had grass at few places and was barren till good length… So, if you bowl short, it can either shoot up or end up being a shooter… If it is a shooter, then the ball is dead… And there was no leg before nor leg bye…

TCS won the toss and elected to field… We scored 107 in 20 overs… I scratched around for some 20 balls to score 5 runs… It was a nightmare… I badly wanted to get out at one point and was relieved when I failed to reach for a 2nd run… I bowled 3 overs on the trot and my last over was preserved for the last over of the innings which never came… The 16th over for us was disastrous when we gave some 12 runs… And then in the 18th over, there was a low full toss which was called No Ball and the batsman holed it to the deep… At that time, 7 runs were required and they had only 2 more wickets… If that wicket had gone, maybe we could have sealed the match… It was controversial, our guys threatened to walk off but good sense prevailed and play resumed… But then, the equation had changed and the bowler gave it away… I felt bad, our guys were demoralized and vowed that they will never play TCS – Target… I felt that it was a poor ball to have got a wicket and bad decisions happen even in international cricket…

People around praised my bowling… I was not very happy since I gave 14 in 3 overs and didn’t get any wicket… I was experimenting and in the process gave away a boundary… Their captain was putting his head down and playing defensive and I had to entice him with an attacking field… He cleared extra cover boundary which was unmanned for a boundary…

Looking back I felt that there was lack of any thinking while batting… I should have played on the front foot and tried for picking balls on the rise… And tap the ball whenever it was pitched short, square of the wicket and behind the wicket… Bowling was ok….

If weather is good, I will be joining Minnesota Gymkhana for nets on Tuesday evening…. That should be fun I suppose… I should also push the Wipro guys to arrange one more match next weekend… J

Life is good otherwise… I didn’t realize the size and might of the downtown since I was staying right in downtown… I had a glimpse of downtown from a distance yesterday while coming back from cricket and couldn’t help a Vow popping out of my mouth… Maybe, I will clip a few snaps next weekend… I also went and did some grocery shopping at Patel Groceries in Capital Avenue… What would Indians do if these Patels had not been this enterprising… Thanks to them, I have access to some Indian spices and stuff and should have proper meal from next week!!!

Back to work… And in the background some Mallu song…. I wonder why people are crazy about the song, “Lajjavathiye”… I might make it for Yesudas Live which is on the 21st… Logistics need to be worked out, if I can sort that out, I will make it…

Well, several phone calls from friends and family served as a reminder that I am getting old... And with each year, life's challenges will increase I guess... Need to maintain fitness and good health, sanity when faced with difficult times in life and God's blessings for taking right steps in life and ability to maintain level headedness even in the midst of success...

There is an important meeting later today for our SBU head at a client's place where we are trying for a breakthrough... I had worked extensively for making an impact and hopefully we will close some business... if that happens, it will be a good thing for me and our practice... So, June becomes an important month for me in that sense...

Aim to get out of work by 6:30-7:00 and go out for dinner with family...

    Debut for Wipro
The big development is that I made my debut for Wipro on Saturday... Wipro is playing in a tennis ball tournament, I was picked to play and returned decent figures of 12-1 in 3 overs... I would have been happy with a few more wickets... Next weekend, there is a leather ball match against Oracle... Let us see whether I get to play...

We have new neighbors from yesterday... Anil and Sonia moved in, their house warming was held yesterday... Was good to catch up with fellow CETians... I always wonder why we need to remain busy in our own lives till a social gathering comes up...

Things are good at home front... Anisya was cranky today on failing to find her mom home when she woke up... Tomorrow, the real test will start since Taruna will return to work... Amma and Achan will be around for a month and a half and that should give some respite... Life goes on... Work life is pretty good...

It is raining heavily outside and that should see me around for an hour at least... Thanks to the Samosa that I just had, I should survive without any major issue...
