Wed, Jul. 16th, 2008, 04:23 pm Excitement for the day
Made a salad with a lot of raw beets last night with dinner. It was good.
Forgot I had done so.
Morning trip to the bathroom -> rush of terror.
Digested raw beets look a lot like bloody carnage. Mon, Jul. 14th, 2008, 01:18 pm I am such a geek
I saw this link randomly in an rss feed I subscribe to: Mutex contention in MySQL
Me immediate reaction was an authentic, verbal "oooooooh..." Sort of like a chef finding a very high quality rare delicious vegetable.
I love being a geek. Tue, Jul. 8th, 2008, 11:57 am Wierdest Interview Ever
Me: Hi. I'm Nick. Going to focus on technical stuff.
Him: Ok.
Me: So, in whatever language you prefer, could you...
Him: (cuts me off) Is this a test?
Me: I guess.
Him: I don't do tests. (packs up and walks out) Mon, Jul. 7th, 2008, 03:59 pm Wow

I'm back from firefly. The event was pretty awesome. ( Read more... )There was some relatively intense car drama. ( Read more... )Thu, Jul. 3rd, 2008, 12:11 pm Firefly
Decided not to go a few months ago...then a ticket fell into my lap and people brow-beat me into going. So I guess I get to spend tonight scrambling to buy camping gear.
Still, should be fun.
I hope my car holds up. She is not known for dealing well with the elements. Tue, Jul. 1st, 2008, 04:29 am Note to self
When grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge at 4am, take special care to ensure that you have not grabbed a bottle of beet juice. Do this before taking a swig.

Any day where I get to legitimately name a variable "assMaster" is a good one in my book. Tue, Jun. 24th, 2008, 04:15 pm And our first major marketing campaign is live...
This is a really limited one -- but something has to go first. Wed, Jun. 18th, 2008, 04:34 pm HIV
Facebook keeps trying to sell me HIV meds.
Do they know something I don't? Sun, Jun. 8th, 2008, 01:54 am Growing social circles
I was driving to the evilcorp party tonight with four friends and saw a 222 somewhere. I was about to point it out when I realized that there were no teps in the group. And only one other MIT person.
On further introspection, I realized that quite a bit, maybe half, of my non-work interactions these days are with non-mit/non-tep people.
This is really heartening. My circles seem to be growing, which is a VeryGoodThing(tm). Wed, May. 14th, 2008, 11:02 am Medicine

I just booked my burning man tickets and tickets to my brother's wedding and, damn, these things have gotten expensive. Almost double what I am used to paying.
I'm cashing in frequent flier miles to do it all, but seats are disappearing incredibly quickly. I had to get first class seats everywhere (the horror!) and fly back from the burn on tuesday, which I really did not want to do.
Still...at least I didn't have to pay for it.
If you are flying out this year, I strongly recommend you buy your plane tickets ASAP. Mon, May. 5th, 2008, 11:59 am Sweet!
The heebees just confirmed that I'm on the early crew. I get to show up on playa on monday, a full week in advance, to help build big tents.
This is going to be awesome. Wed, Apr. 23rd, 2008, 01:05 pm Fast
Around 9 last night, the detox stuff started to hit me. Got really tired, stuffy runny nose, body aches, etc. Was much the same this morning, though my morning yoga set helped immensely.
Hunger has been an issue, but not a huge one. Smelling my co-workers foods has been bigger.
I broke down and decided to add in hemp milk, as this body really does need some protein. It's easy to digest and pretty clean, so I don't think it'll have a negative effect on the fast. One glass (3 tbsp hulled hempseeds in the blender with 12oz water) was a little under 200 kcal, which isn't so bad. None of it is sugar, too, which means I'm good on the race for ketosis.
35 hours left. Not that I'm counting.
Another date with Justin tonight. Will see how this goes. Tue, Apr. 22nd, 2008, 01:14 pm Fast
It has been some time since I did a substantial fast. ( Read more... )There also appears to be a new boy in the picture. ( Read more... )Mon, Apr. 21st, 2008, 09:56 am Purging
I decided friday night that I've been drinking/smoking/etc more regularly than I would like. Not excessive, by any means, but I'm getting used to having one or two glasses of wine every night and a bit more once or twice a week. So it is time for a purge. 40 days of no inebriants. It was only after I made the commitment that I realize roast was coming. Oh well -- there are dramatically worse fates than being sober at roast once a decade. I decided to throw meat in too. I've been falling back into the habit of eating it most days.
Then, last night, after dinner with emneal and wax, I decided I needed to do something more aggressive to help break the nasty things I've been doing with tons of sugar and cheese lately. So now I'm doing a three-day greens-only fast, with a taper today and friday. Tons of fun.
It is weird how, these days, it feels like these decisions are starting to happen automatically. I notice my body getting a bit out of balance on something and have an intuitive sense of how to tweak my diet to fix it. It all feels very simple. Not easy, per se, but simple. An important coupling here has been getting away from feeling guilty about letting myself get a bit off-track and rather focusing on using self-discipline to tweak myself back in whatever direction I want to go. Fri, Apr. 18th, 2008, 10:58 am Turban
I finally got over it all and ordered a turban.
Now I just need to learn how to tie one.
Then I need to figure out how I'm going to do my american-flag turban for burning man. I'm psyched about that idea. Wed, Apr. 9th, 2008, 04:47 pm *smirk*

Hi All.
I'm going to keep my day-to-day musings here, but I'm moving psychospiritual stuff to glob.qwidjibo.org, starting with an accounting of this weekend's ceremony.
Enjoy! |
