Results of the Ice Water Experiment

Posted on 2008.06.27 at 23:45
The results of the science experiment from the previous post.

First run, a small plastic cup is filled with as much ice cubes as possible then filled with water to the brim where the water’s adhesive properties curves above the surface of the cup with a few ice cubes halfway floating above that. After about an hour, the ice melts. None of the water seemed to have spilled, nor has the level seem to gone down. The water level appeared to be unchanged. Lab error: Some of the water might have escape though plastic cup through condensation and/or the volume created does not break the adhesive property of water?

Second run, a Styrofoam cup is set up the same as above. It took twice as long for the ice cubes to melt, and the results was the same – no change in level.

Conclusion? I need to read up on mass, volume and density to figure why is this? And apparently melting sea ice won't significantly rise or lower sea level.

The North Pole has a Liberal Bias.

Sudhir and I are running a science experiment at the office today.

They say the ice may disappear entirely from the North Pole this year. From my understanding, ice melting at the North Pole should not have any significant change in the sea level. Since water expands when it freezes, the sea ice will displace more water than it will produce when it melts.

Well now I’m going to prove my theory with a cup of ice water. I filled a small cup with ice and poured water to the brim. When the ice melts, do you think the level will go up or down? I say that the ice will displace the water and bring the level down. Sudhir says the ice will add volume and bring the level up. Let's see who's going to be right.

The British Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, flew over the New York Harbor today. I was able to catch the spectacle from the shores of South Beach on Staten Island. It was a spectacular sight that I wish could have shared with Harley. +16 )

Telectroscope from Brooklyn looking at London

My sister and I went to check out the Telectroscope last night and saw a bunch of drunks from Across the Pond who had a 5-hour head start on their Friday night. +8 )

Also some fun videos I took, ‘cause stills don’t really capture the true essence of the Telectroscope:

Telectroscope from Brooklyn (8pm EST) looking at London (1am BST) from Desmond Chow on Vimeo. It was around 8pm here in Brooklyn, so with the power of the Telectroscope you could see the wonderful drunks in London dancing around at 1am at night.

The Work From Home Scam

Posted on 2008.06.05 at 11:28
I was emailed this woodsidegroup.org which is one of those work from home type of job and this is all that you have to do.
Your tasks are:

1. Receive payment from Customers

2. Cash Payments at your Bank

3. Deduct 8% which will be your percentage pay on Payment processed

4. Forward balance after deduction of percentage pay to any of the offices you will be designated to send the payment to. (Payment is to be forwarded either by Money Gram or Western Union Money Transfer).

Local Money transfers take barely hours, so it will give us a possibility to get customer's payment almost immediately.

For example you've got 4000.00 USD

You take your income: 320.00 USD

Send the company: 3680.00 USD

First month you will have 15-20 transactions on 3000.00 - 4000.00 USD So you may calculate your income.

For example 18 transactions on 3500.00 USD gives you 4410.00 USD Plus your basis monthly salary is 1000.00 USD

Total: 5410.00 USD per month
I think it's completely funny how they left out step 5. "Have your bank notify you that the deposits you made were stolen/fraudulent/invalid" and that instead of making 8% you now owe the bank 100% of what you cashed.

Office Prank

It looks like someone in the office is going to be without his shoes throughout the whole day. I wonder what is he going to do about lunch and bathroom breaks? Hrm maybe in an hour, I'll leave him some cardboard and tape on his desk.

Tin Cart Food

Posted on 2008.04.23 at 13:26
Mmmm a halal pushcart has started doing business at a corner from my apartment. So I could just go downstairs for some chicken or lamb on a bed of flavored basmati rice along with a side salad covered in 'white' and hot sauce at less than the cost of any fast food value meal out there. Yum! And there also make some tasty falafels too. Also the best part is the halal products follow a strict regulation in relation to kosher practices, which gives you peace of mind that you’re not eating crap.

Anyhow I was wondering if there are places out there that serve halal other than New York City?

Planning Spring Break

Posted on 2008.03.16 at 10:01
There is this laundromat right next to my apartment. Small place with 12 double load and 3 triple load washer along with 8 working dryers. Anyhow I went to do a load of laundry early this morning only to find it being monopolized by some lady and her teenage daughter. I had to wait about half a cycle until a washer was free. It didn’t bother me much, but I can’t understand why do women have so much clothes!?

Anyhow Harley is currently skiing with her mom in Vermont and should be stopping by here to spend the rest of her spring break with me in New York. This would be the first time in a long time that I have spent more than a weekend with Harley. And I’m not quite sure what to do with her with this coming week?

Death Pool 2008

Posted on 2007.12.31 at 09:34
Has anyone played the Death Pool? Rules are simple. You have to pick 10 well known people who you think will die in the upcoming year, 1 of which must be a wildcard/unlikely candidate. The scoring is done at the end of the year like so: Subtract the age at death from 100, and that's how many points you get. You get 50 points for hitting your wildcard. If a person on your list dies in the very first or very last week of the year, you get an extra 20 points for that person. The player with the most points wins.

So far my list for 2008 is:
  1. Bob Barker (How the hell long is this guy gonna live?!)
  2. Dick Clark
  3. Fidel Castro
  4. Amy Winehouse
  5. Courtney Love
  6. Osama bin Laden
  7. Jerry Lewis
  8. Johnny Carson
  9. Ed McMahon
  10. (WILDCARD) Britney Spears
This is my first draft and the selection seems a bit shitty so far. I don’t know if it would be worthy to submit in the office death pool nor do I think I would have a better draft by the end of the day. Anyone have any better picks in mind?

Family from the Old Country

Posted on 2007.10.09 at 11:02
I’m so glad I didn’t out away my air-conditioner because who could sleep on such a hot and humid October?

Anyhow my granduncle and his wife and two twenty-something year old daughters (my aunts) have came over from Taiwan to visit. They have been staying with my grandparents in Staten Island, but I’m unsure if they have been making much of their time here with my grandparents being their hosts. Therefore I was thinking of stopping by today to talk to them to see if there have any plans, else I would just take a night to show them around. Just unsure what though?
