3:33 pm - My Word Balloon podcast interview
"Comix aren't just for comix readers anymore."

http://media.libsyn.com/media/wordballoon/WBdeanhaspiel08.mp3

John Siuntres was kind enough to interview me this week over the phone for his excellent comix podcast website, Word Balloon, where I discuss digital comix, my Eisner Award nominated Billy Dogma, Street Code, Next-Door Neighbor, my collaborations with Jonathan Ames on THE ALCOHOLIC, Jeff Parker on X-MEN FIRST CLASS, and my upcoming kids book, MO & JO: FIGHTING TOGETHER FOREVER, with underground comix legend, Jay Lynch, for Francoise Mouly's Toon Books, and much more. The podcast runs 54:25.

11:41 am - X-men First Class
Awhile back, I received a nice email from Jeff Parker, creator of THE INTERMAN and writer of Marvel Comics' AGENTS OF ATLAS and X-MEN FIRST CLASS, inviting me to draw a 6pp XFC story featuring The Beast and Ice Man for their special Halloween issue. Jeff asked my what some of my favorite horror films were and one of the movies I mentioned, THE THING, is what we settled on paying homage to. Here is the official solicitation for the upcoming October release:

GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: FIRST CLASS #1
Written by JEFF PARKER & ROGER LANGRIDGE
Penciled by MICHAEL CHO, ROGER LANGRIDGE, NICK KILISLIAN, DEAN HASPIEL, DAVID WILLIAMS & JEFF PARKER
Cover by JEFF PARKER, KEVIN NOWLAN & BRAD ANDERSON

Just in time for Halloween, The Beast starts conducting investigations into his own "X" files around the world! Are there aliens among us or things even weirder? Featuring special guest-star artists and classic material too! And emboldened by the safety net of Nowlan inks, Parker even drew the cover!

48 PGS./Rated A …$3.99

Before I start laying out any story, I like to do some quick sketches of the main characters. Here are some initial drawings I did that will probably change by the time I do the final art:

No. I won't be at San Diego Comicon.

Yes. THE DARK KNIGHT makes BATMAN BEGINS look like a lost Adam West episode.

MO & JO: FIGHTING TOGETHER FOREVER, my collaboration with Jay Lynch, is slated to drop in September, the same month THE ALCOHOLIC, my collaboration with Jonathan Ames, comes out.

Polar opposite books...from cradle to grave. It's going to be an interesting September.
